Accelerated Carbonation Technology (ACT) can be used to create new sands and gravels from ashes or dusts, or enhance the geotechnics of slurries and sludges to form granular soil-like materials.
ACT is an enhanced physical and chemical treatment, which allows materials to be reused which otherwise would be fit only for disposal. Unlike other methods, which require the addition of chemical reagents, carbonation can harness the natural reactive properties of industrial by-products to produce new materials entirely from wastes.
Using Carbon8 Contracting’s granulation expertise, problematic and geotechnically unsound waste can be reconstituted into a range of coarser grained products. By adjusting the process, material in the required size range can be manufactured. This allows production of granules and gravels for use as general fills and specific applications including pipe bedding. Manufactured pebbles and cobbles are suitable for use as a lightweight aggregate substitute, having comparable mechanical and chemical properties to commercial products. Successful consumer trials have utilised carbonated aggregate in concrete block manufacture, and as a horticultural growing medium.
Direct treatment with ACT reduces the hazardous properties of waste, without altering the grain size. This material is an ideal filler in a range of applications, including as a sand replacement.
Soils which are contaminated with metals, contain large amounts of clay, or have a high water content can present a major obstacle for land regeneration. Carbonation can produce a friable material from difficult soils, whilst effectively dealing with the contaminants.
